AI Usage Policy

Jurnal Antropologi: Isu-Isu Sosial Budaya acknowledges the increasing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in academic research and scholarly writing. This policy provides clear guidance on the responsible and ethical use of AI-based tools in the preparation of manuscripts submitted for publication in the journal.

While AI tools can assist in improving language clarity, managing references, and analyzing data, authors remain fully accountable for the originality, intellectual contribution, and integrity of their manuscripts.

Permitted Uses of AI Tools

Authors are permitted to utilize AI tools for supportive functions that enhance the quality and efficiency of manuscript preparation, including but not limited to:

  • Language enhancement: Grammar correction, spell-checking, and style improvements using tools such as Grammarly, ChatGPT (for refinement only), or similar platforms.

  • Reference management: Assistance with formatting citations and generating bibliographies through software like Zotero, EndNote, or Mendeley.

  • Plagiarism detection: Use of AI-based tools to ensure content originality prior to submission.

  • Data processing support: Use of AI algorithms for statistical calculations, coding assistance, or data visualization, where clearly documented and verifiable.

Prohibited Uses of AI Tools

The use of AI tools is strictly prohibited in the following areas:

  • Autonomous content generation: AI must not be used to draft core intellectual components of the manuscript, such as the introduction, theoretical framework, methodology, findings, analysis, or conclusion. These sections must reflect the author’s original thought and academic rigor.

  • Data fabrication or manipulation: AI tools may not be used to falsify data, simulate results, or construct misleading representations of empirical findings.

  • Ethical misconduct: Any use of AI that compromises scholarly integrity—including plagiarism, duplication, or unethical citation practices—is considered a serious violation of the journal’s ethical standards.

Responsibilities and Recommendations

Authors utilizing AI tools must:

  • Critically evaluate AI-assisted content: AI-generated suggestions or outputs must be reviewed, validated, and revised by the authors to ensure academic accuracy and relevance.

  • Disclose AI usage: All uses of AI in manuscript preparation must be transparently disclosed in the Acknowledgments section, including the name and function of the tool(s) used.

  • Retain authorship accountability: Regardless of AI assistance, authors are solely responsible for the content, interpretation, and conclusions presented in the manuscript.

Ethical Standards

All submissions must comply with the journal’s ethical policies, in line with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines. Misuse of AI tools, including but not limited to content fabrication, ghostwriting, or unacknowledged authorship contributions, will be treated as violations of publication ethics and may lead to retraction, rejection, or institutional reporting.

Editorial Assessment

Manuscripts—whether AI-assisted or not—are subject to the journal’s standard double-blind peer review process. AI involvement does not exempt manuscripts from rigorous scientific and ethical scrutiny.

Policy Review and Updates

This policy is subject to periodic review and revision to reflect technological advancements and evolving ethical standards in scholarly publishing. Updates will be published on the journal’s website as necessary.
